Most excavation calls around Jacksonville come down to one thing: getting a spot high and dry enough to build on. The city sits at sea level on the New River, and the flat ground around it holds water. Coastal Brush Mowing runs excavation work across Onslow County with excavators and a tracked skid steer. We have done this since 2013, out of Burgaw, about forty minutes south.
Dirt work in Onslow County starts and ends with where the water goes. Soils like the Leon series drain poorly and hold water close to the surface on flat ground. Build a pad on that without raising it and the slab sits wet every winter. We shape the pad, cut the fall away from it and give the water somewhere to go.

Detached garages and pole barns are the most common pads we build around Jacksonville. Onslow County wants a zoning permit for an accessory structure, and a building permit once any dimension passes 12 feet. Buildings under 400 square feet have to stay five feet off the side and rear property lines. At 400 square feet or more, that setback goes to eight feet.
Setbacks matter to us because they decide where the pad can sit. Accessory buildings also have to stay five feet clear of the septic area and the repair area. Horse stables are allowed as an accessory use in every county zoning district on lots of an acre or more. We shoot the grades with those lines in mind, then build the pad to fit.
Driveways are the other half of our Jacksonville excavation work. A drive on flat coastal plain needs a crown and somewhere for the runoff to leave. Where the drive crosses a ditch, it needs pipe sized for the water and set at the right depth. If the drive ties into a state maintained road, NCDOT permits the connection.
Standing water in a yard usually comes down to grade. On these flat lots the fall can be a few inches across a hundred feet. We cut swales, clean out ditches and set the fall so the water keeps moving. On a tract with an old structure on it, that work often follows demolition we are already doing.
More about the service itself is on our Excavation page, and everything we do around town is on the Jacksonville service-area page.
