Older single wides sit on rural lots all over Onslow County, and plenty of them are past saving. The same goes for the sheds and block outbuildings on land that has changed hands. Onslow County requires a permit from the tax office before a mobile home leaves its lot. That permit comes from the Collections Division at 234 NW Corridor Boulevard in Jacksonville. Any back taxes plus the estimated taxes for the current year have to be paid first. Moving a home without one is a Class 3 misdemeanor under state law.
Most of the homes we get called on come apart right where they sit. The material leaves in loads, and the lot is clear by the end of it. Old single wides give up a lot of steel frame and metal roofing that can be pulled out separately. Send us photos of the home and we can tell you how it will come apart.
Onslow County has been farmed a long time, with about 52,500 acres still in production. Buy an older tract out toward Richlands and you often inherit a sagging barn or a block pump house. Those come down cleanly once the roof is off and the walls have somewhere to fall. We take the foundation and the slab with them, so the ground goes back to grade.
Storm damage is its own category here. Jacksonville has taken hurricane weather for centuries, and a bad one still puts roofs on the ground. When a structure is unsafe to enter, we work it from the outside with the excavator. Once it is down and hauled, the spot is ready for new dirt work.
