Rocky Point is close to home for us, a short drive down US 117 from Burgaw. Being nearby means we can fit a half day of mowing in around the bigger jobs on the schedule. Pasture around Rocky Point gets away from people faster than they expect. Sandy coastal plain ground grows blackberry, dog fennel and pine seedlings through a single warm season. Left two years, a clean field turns into stems too thick for a finish mower to touch. A bush hog knocks all of that back to a few inches so grass can take the field again.
Fence lines are the part most owners want done and least want to do themselves. Wire disappears under vines, and then a limb falls and you cannot see the break until an animal finds it. We cut a clean strip on both sides so the fence stays visible and the posts stay dry. Ditch banks and road frontage along NC 210 get the same pass, since they grow in first.
NC 210 meets I-40 at Rocky Point, and land near that interchange has been changing hands for years. Some owners are farming it and some are sitting on it while they wait for the right offer. Either way it has to be mowed, or it goes to scrub and stops looking like usable ground. One or two cuts a year keeps a held tract open and easy to show a buyer.
Rocky Point runs up against wet country on its north and east sides. Holly Shelter Game Land alone covers more than 63,000 acres of pocosin drained by the Northeast Cape Fear River. Tracts near that edge stay soft, so we time those cuts for a dry spell and stay on tracks. On hunting land we can cut trails and shooting lanes instead of mowing the whole tract.
