Stump grinding is the last step on a lot of jobs around Burgaw, and the one people put off. A tree comes down, or a lot gets opened up during land clearing, and the stump stays put. It catches a mower deck, and it sits in the way of the fence or shed you had planned. We take stumps out for homeowners and builders across Pender County, and over in Wilmington, Jacksonville and Whiteville.
There are two ways a stump comes out, and the right one depends on what the ground is for. Grinding takes the stump down below the surface, so grass can grow over the spot again. Pulling it whole with the excavator takes the root ball out too, which matters before you build. We are not a tree service, so what we handle is the stump the tree left behind.

Grinding is the faster answer when the stump sits in a lawn and nothing is going on top of it. The stump gets chewed down below the surface, and the roots are left in the ground to rot. Under grass or a flower bed that is fine, and it costs less than digging the whole thing out. Under concrete it is a problem, because rotting wood leaves voids and the slab settles into them.
When the ground is getting cleared or built on anyway, pulling the stump out whole makes more sense. The excavator gets a bucket under the root ball and lifts the whole thing out in one piece. The hole gets backfilled and packed down while the machine is still sitting over it. That is the same work we do on excavation jobs, so stumps come out with everything else.
A ground stump leaves two things behind: a pile of wood chips and a low spot. The chips can stay on site as mulch, or they can go in the dump truck with us. Grass seeded straight into fresh grindings comes in thin, because the chips pull nitrogen out of the soil. So the grindings get raked out of the hole first, then the hole gets filled with dirt.
Fresh fill settles over the next few months, and the spot usually dips a little. A wheelbarrow of dirt fixes one stump, and the grass fills back in from the edges. A lot with a dozen stumps out of it is a different problem, and the ground reads rough. That is where grading and dirt work comes in, and we can level the whole area at once.
We have been taking stumps out of this ground since 2013, and most of it is coastal plain sand. Sand is kind to a stump job, because the root ball breaks loose instead of holding on like clay. Low spots are the exception, where the water table sits close to the surface much of the year. Those get timed for dry weather, so the machine does not tear up the yard on the way in.
Hurricane season is the other reason the phone rings about stumps. A storm drops a tree, someone cuts it up for firewood, and the stump is still there by spring. Brush closes back in around it fast down here, and a hidden stump is what wrecks a mower deck. Call (910) 512-9578 or use the contact page, and the person who answers runs the machine.
