Stump Grinding in Burgaw, NC

Stump Grinding · Burgaw, NC

Stumps Ground Down or Pulled Out

Stump grinding is the last step on a lot of jobs around Burgaw, and the one people put off. A tree comes down, or a lot gets opened up during land clearing, and the stump stays put. It catches a mower deck, and it sits in the way of the fence or shed you had planned. We take stumps out for homeowners and builders across Pender County, and over in Wilmington, Jacksonville and Whiteville.

There are two ways a stump comes out, and the right one depends on what the ground is for. Grinding takes the stump down below the surface, so grass can grow over the spot again. Pulling it whole with the excavator takes the root ball out too, which matters before you build. We are not a tree service, so what we handle is the stump the tree left behind.

What We Handle

  • Stump grinding for lawns and yards
  • Stump removal after tree work or storms
  • Stump and root ball pulled whole with the excavator
  • Stumps taken out ahead of a slab or driveway
  • Several stumps cleared in one visit
  • Grindings raked out or hauled off in the dump truck
  • Hole backfilled and the spot left level
  • Tracked skid steer for cleanup and tight access

Grind the Stump or Pull It Out

Grinding is the faster answer when the stump sits in a lawn and nothing is going on top of it. The stump gets chewed down below the surface, and the roots are left in the ground to rot. Under grass or a flower bed that is fine, and it costs less than digging the whole thing out. Under concrete it is a problem, because rotting wood leaves voids and the slab settles into them.

When the ground is getting cleared or built on anyway, pulling the stump out whole makes more sense. The excavator gets a bucket under the root ball and lifts the whole thing out in one piece. The hole gets backfilled and packed down while the machine is still sitting over it. That is the same work we do on excavation jobs, so stumps come out with everything else.

What Happens to the Grindings and the Hole

A ground stump leaves two things behind: a pile of wood chips and a low spot. The chips can stay on site as mulch, or they can go in the dump truck with us. Grass seeded straight into fresh grindings comes in thin, because the chips pull nitrogen out of the soil. So the grindings get raked out of the hole first, then the hole gets filled with dirt.

Fresh fill settles over the next few months, and the spot usually dips a little. A wheelbarrow of dirt fixes one stump, and the grass fills back in from the edges. A lot with a dozen stumps out of it is a different problem, and the ground reads rough. That is where grading and dirt work comes in, and we can level the whole area at once.

Stumps in Pender County Ground

We have been taking stumps out of this ground since 2013, and most of it is coastal plain sand. Sand is kind to a stump job, because the root ball breaks loose instead of holding on like clay. Low spots are the exception, where the water table sits close to the surface much of the year. Those get timed for dry weather, so the machine does not tear up the yard on the way in.

Hurricane season is the other reason the phone rings about stumps. A storm drops a tree, someone cuts it up for firewood, and the stump is still there by spring. Brush closes back in around it fast down here, and a hidden stump is what wrecks a mower deck. Call (910) 512-9578 or use the contact page, and the person who answers runs the machine.

What is the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?
Stump grinding takes the stump down below the surface and leaves the roots in the ground to rot. Stump removal pulls the stump and the root ball out whole, which is excavator work. Grinding is quicker and cheaper, and it is usually the right pick for a lawn. Removal is the right pick when a slab or a driveway is going over that spot.
How deep does a stump have to be ground down?
Deep enough for whatever is going over it. A lawn needs less than a driveway or a building pad does, and a fence line is somewhere in between. We look at the stump, ask what you want in that spot, and set the depth there. A deeper grind on a big stump takes longer, so tell us the plan before we start.
How much does stump removal cost?
It depends on the size of the stump and whether a machine can get to it. A row of small stumps on an open lot is a different job than one oak behind a fence. What happens to the grindings moves the number as well. Call (910) 512-9578 and we will come look at the stump, then give you a price.
Do you cut down trees too?
No, we are not a tree service, and we do not drop or climb standing trees. We handle the stump the tree leaves behind, whether a tree crew cut it or a storm took it. Plenty of our stump work follows somebody else's chainsaw. If the tree is still standing, have it dropped first, then call us for the stump.
What happens to the wood chips and the hole?
The grindings are yours if you want them, and they work as mulch around the yard. Otherwise they go in the dump truck and leave with us. Either way, the chips get raked out of the hole and the hole gets filled with dirt. Fresh fill settles over a few months, so top the spot off before you seed it.
