Jacksonville has taken hurricane weather since long before the base was here. A storm in 1752 wrecked the original county seat and pushed the town to the site it holds today. Storm work leaves stumps behind, especially where a pine snapped off or tipped over in wet ground. We grind those flush or lower, then rake the chips back into the hole.
The other big source is land clearing. When a lot gets cleared, some stumps come out with the tree and some stay in the ground. Grinding handles the ones sitting near a septic area, a water line or a driveway edge. Those spots are too tight to dig, and the county keeps accessory buildings five feet off septic and repair areas.
We start by finding what is buried around the stump. Yard work means marking the water line, the septic line and the irrigation heads before the teeth go in. On acreage the risk drops, though old fence wire and buried block still turn up. Once it is marked, we grind the stump and the surface roots below grade.
How deep we grind depends on what is going into that spot next. Grass and sod need four to six inches below grade. A fence post, a slab or a driveway needs deeper, since shallow roots rot out and the ground settles. Tell us the plan for the spot, or send us a photo, and we grind to match.
